The 2008 edition of Lanzarote IRONMAN was held on may 26th, and like in former years we were able to follow a great sports event with a record number of participants of 1201 registered men and women, 1117 of them reached the finishing line. This years winner is Bert Jammaer vom Belgium who managed the 3,8 km swim, 180 km cycling, and 42 km run in just under 9 hours in a total time of 8:59,38 hrs. Congratulations!
As in former years, DIVEYOURWAY participated as a rescue team during the swim contest. Thanks to all volunteers who were giving a hand!
October: The Sony Ericsson Racing Team has chosen Lanzarote´s Puerto Calero as their home to prepare for the 2008/2009 Volvo Ocean Race. A new pantoon was installed quickly and tents for communication, maintanance and kitchen were brought up in the shortest time possible to provide the Crew with the best training facilities. We can feel the scent of Formula 1 Yacht Racing since October and it´s a really special atmosphere around. If you are on the Island, go and have a look....
September: In the end of september the townhall of Tias made allowance for the rising number of scuba divers on the island and the growing importance of diving tourism by organising the "1st public meeting of suba divers", held within the celebrations of Puerto del Carmen´s 40th anniversary as a tourist destination. About 250 divers, tourists and locals, followed the invitiation on a wonderful sunday morning, and after official registration at 10 a.m. everbody got ready for the plunge. The Atlantic Ocean welcomed them like Kings: no surge, no current, 30 m visability - what else could you ask for? Back on land, divers gathered for the mandatory photo and couldn´t wait to dig in the barbecue and canarian specialties offered. Of course, plenty of drink was available, too. Divers talk and laugh was to be heard until late, and the event was such a great success that provisions are already made for 2008!
In April we had a prominent visitor: Markus Schirmer. Within the international classical music scene the musician from Graz is known as one of the most sensitive and exciting pianists of his generation. He spent his holidays together with good friends in Hotel Los Fariones in Puerto del Carmen with the main objective to enjoy his next passion after music: diving!
